Plasma cutting - Function, advantages and disadvantages

Jun 25, 2019 · The basic process in plasma cutting and welding is to create an electrical channel of superheated, electrically ionised gas – i.e. plasma - from the plasma cutter itself through the workpiece to be cut, thus forming a finished circuit back to the plasma cutter via an earth terminal. This is achieved by a compressed gas (oxygen, air, inert gas and others depending on the material to be cut) which is blown to the workpiece at high speed through a focused nozzle.

Plasma Arc Machining- Process, Diagram , Advantages and ...

Called PAM, this is a method of cutting metal with a plasma-arc, or tungsten inert-gas-arc, torch. The torch produces a high-velocity jet of high-temperature ionized gas called plasma that cuts by melting and removing material from the workpiece. Temperatures in the plasma zone range from 20,000° to 50,000° F (11,000° to 28,000° C).

The Common Plasma Cutting Problems and Solutions | Tools Focus

May 10, 2020 · 1. Neglecting the monitoring of the flow and pressure of the gas and coolant is a common cause of torch and consumables failure. So, it’s important to check it every day. Ensure constant gas pressure to maintain the cutting arc. However, excess gas pressure can cause torch failure to start an arc, even at normal working condition.

APPLICATION OF PLASMA IN CUTTING TECHNOLOGY

As plasma gas i. e. the monatomic argon and/or the bi-atomic gases hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and air are used. These plasma gases ionize and dissociate by the energy of the plasma arc. By recombination of the atoms and molecules outside the nozzle-cathode-system the received energy is suddenly set free and intensifies the thermal impact of the plasma beam on the workpiece. Fig. 1. Plasma cutting . 2. THE MAIN AREAS OF THE APPLICATION PLASMAS BEAM

How a Plasma Cutter Works - Lincoln Electric

A plasma cutter will use this electrically conductive gas to transfer energy from a power supply to any conductive material, resulting in a cleaner, faster cutting process than with oxyfuel. The plasma arc formation begins when a gas such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, or even shop air is forced through a small nozzle orifice inside the torch.

Mar 10, 2020 · The tool rests on a 4-by-4-foot table filled with water, which helps absorb the heat and sparks generated by the plasma cutting torch. The material to be cut is placed on the table on a grid raised just above the water level; above that looms the controller, a bar that straddles the table and holds and guides the plasma torch in any direction.

What kind of nozzle does a plasma cutting torch use?

Plasma cutting torches usually use a copper nozzle to constrict the gas stream with the arc flowing through it. That arc jumps from an electrode in the torch to something else – usually the conductive material being cut. That’s a ‘transferred arc’.
